adventure, my hero

My Husband is my hero for many reasons. In my early (very early) 50's, and I am so glad I married a man who loved adventure.
And now I feel terribly sorry for my husband that he didn't.
But now I am determined to right his fate.
adventure, my hero
To set the scene : In 1994, I got off the train from Salzberg, Austria at St.Anton am Arlberg.
With one of my best mates, skis and snowboard in hand.
The first person I see is a tall stranger decked out head to toe in yellow and black Northface.
I am in love!
Fast forward a couple of weeks and so was he.
My hero, my adventurer, as captured in issue 11 of a 1995 edition of Fall Line.

Over the next couple of seasons I got to explore the trails and backcountry of Austria's famous alps with an experienced back-country tourer as my guide. My only hope in keeping up with our group was on a snowboard, and I was often the one holding my group of mates back. The adventures are faint but the awe has stayed with me as strongly as I felt it then.
My Poor Husband did not marry into adventure
After early adventures, we were lucky to visit Europe on numerous occasions and travelled as much as we could. We surfed, camped and golfed when at home. But with children came business, responsibility, adulting and a constant rise and fall of financial means. Whilst I loved adventuring, I was so tied up in everyday life, with a brain that was fixed in the Default Mode Network. Whilst there was a few great family holidays, numerous camping trips and a couple of good snow seasons with the kids when they were older, I just never prioritised adventure.
My loyal husband always new what he was missing out on, but only managed a couple of back-country trips and a solo ski holiday to Japan.
We are proof that relationships can survive when one person is looking for a new adventurous trail whilst the other is wondering if there is coffee at the end it. And I am sorry that personal trauma has brought me to the place of realisation that back-country is the best country. But I am so glad it is not too late for us, both as individuals and a couple.
Here is to the rest of our lifetime of Adventure
My husband doesn't know this but my top goal now in life is to enjoy the outdoors, get out beyond my comfort zone and create every opportunity to connect with my precious family and friends in any adventure of any kind, as often as we can.
Fall Line, here we come!
